Girl’s Night Out Surprise & My New CuteZCute Sandwich Cutter!

Girl’s Night Out Surprise & My New CuteZCute Sandwich Cutter!

I used Girlie’s Bento to deliver a lunchtime surprise yesterday! This is what she found when she opened up her lunch bag:

Girlie is in Kindergarten and learning to read.  I knew she’d have a fun time trying to decode my note!  Inside her EasyLunchbox, I had shopping and movie date themed sandwiches and picks. She has high heel shoe PB&J sandwiches with a couple of cubes of cheddar cheese and some grapes in the main compartment.  There is a mini-dipper of ranch dressing and some red bell pepper and cucumbers in the small compartment, and slices of plum and kiwi in the smallest compartment.  She was proud to tell me that she ate up all her lunch and went to rest right away so she’d have plenty of energy for our date!

We had a great time shopping (H&M is our current fave) and we both thought Hotel Transylvania was hilarious!! Girlie was particularly enamored with the main character, Mavis.  I try to take her out on a movie date every so often and she really appreciates it. It is fun to have some civilized girl time and I really enjoy her company!  She always feels special when I make time for her alone and she especially loves surprises!

I just discovered an amazing new bento tool – the CuteZCute sandwich cutter!  This tool cuts the most adorable piggies, pandas, frogs, and cats.  I used it to make this adorable piggy sandwich for Little Dude, who thinks pigs are the coolest because of their snorting noise!

Little Dude has a pig PB&J with Colby-Jack accents, cheddar cheese cubes, grapes, yogurt, plum, and kiwi.  He was so excited about the pig sandwich that he requested one for breakfast and he was able to make the cutouts himself. The cutter comes with a “Panda Assistant” tool that you use to pop out the little accent pieces and he loved using the tool.  All 4 cutouts are super cute and I am in love with this tool.  I have not been compensated for my glowing review, nor did I receive a CuteZCute for free. I am just telling you my genuine review that this is a must-have item and this would be a great holiday gift.   Here is the link to the CuteZCute cutter on amazon.com. Also, check out the CuteZCute pinterest board!

Here is my Wednesday lunch, which was an experiment for both kids.  Girlie tried baked tofu the other night and liked it, so I wanted to put some in her lunchbox, with the cute cutouts I’ve seen Wendolonia doing.  I also included a Chobani Champions for dairy.  Eh, it didn’t fly.  She barely touched the tofu.  Little Dude had leftovers, and that actually did go over well with him!  He also got pears, grapes, and cheddar cheese triangles in that cute little bento box I got from Daiso in San Francisco last month.

Today’s Lunch was my typical Fridge-Is-Bare Friday Bento. Little Dude got cheese and crackers with grapes in the main compartment, applesauce in the large compartment, and trail mix in the smallest compartment.  It seems a little bit boring to me, but it is all food he loves and I know he’ll have fun making cheese & cracker sandwiches.

I’m traveling next week, but have a great post planned for you mid-week, so stay tuned!  When you travel, do you pack lunches in advance for the family or do you let your husband and kids work it out on their own?  I’d love any suggestions on make-ahead lunchboxes.  Thanks!

Happy Birthday Bento!

Happy Birthday Bento!

My girlie turned 6 today.  What?? How?? Even though it feels like my life revolves around her and I have tried my best to take in every little moment, I still don’t understand how I could possibly have a 6 year-old in my life!  I know that this is a universal experience of time flying with your little ones, but I am just floored by it anyway.

We had a big BBQ party for her yesterday and there was a ton of leftovers.  To save time and ensure the leftovers were consumed, I packed the bento lunches as I put away the rest of the food.  I packed the kids in their Easy LunchBoxes and my husband got his Lock & Lock.

Here’s Girlie’s birthday BBQ bento:

She has this amazing pasta salad that my mom made with some cubes of white cheddar cheese.  I added picks to spell out the word SIX for her. I’ll have to do a proper six bento later this week, but this will have to do for now.  She was so exited to have a lunch made of “party food” as it was!  She has a fruit salad of pineapple, grapes, and strawberries and some veggies with low-fat ranch in a mini-dipper container.  This will be a healthy and filling lunch for her.

Little Dude’s lunch is similar. He has pasta salad, cheese and crackers, fruit salad, and 2 small slices of tomato pie.  I added some animal fork picks to give him a smile.

My husband got one compartment of the leftover burger toppings and a hamburger.  I threw some extra cauliflower in there too.  The other compartment has pasta salad, fruit salad, veggies, and ranch dip in a small heart container marked “XOXO.”

I was traveling the whole week prior to her party and did not have a lot of time to put together a big bash for her.  We decided on a simple BBQ, but it grew and grew until we ended up with around 50 guests!  Our plan was to have a Pinterest party and attempt some of the pins from our Birthday Parties board, but a lot of those got lost in the chaos of 17 kids running around like crazy!  The kids mostly played in the bounce house, beat up on the piñata, and did some arts and crafts I set out for them (painting and decorating building blocks and foam bookmarks).  The crafts were actually a huge hit and the kids were very creative with their projects.  I was impressed!

Some of the pins I had planned on never even got started.  I wanted to make these ice cream hearts and a star walkway to our backyard party.  I also wanted to do this simple trick with the water bottles.  I just did not have time leading up to or during the party.

We did try to explode watermelons, but all the big ones were gone and it didn’t seem like it was going to work on the tiny ones we found, so we abandoned that too.  I think the only pin we successfully re-created was the terra-cotta-pot-s’mores.  Here is a picture of Girlie with the man she has identified has “the love of her life” making s’mores together:

She is absolutely certain that she is going to marry him when they’re older! Here is my Little Dude going wild on the piñata:

All the kids had fun with that and the scramble for candy was intense!  Finally, here is a picture of my beautiful girlie basking in the glow of the Happy Birthday song:

Aaaaaah! I love how much she grows and changes, but I get very sentimental at birthday time.  I just could not keep my cool when I tucked her in last night, knowing she’d never be 5 again.  Of course, she hugged me and told me not to be sad and that she will always be my baby no matter how old she gets.  And she will.  But not like this.  Not like she is right now.  Sigh.  Oh well, I did sign up for this roller coaster!

She was so gracious at her party and tried to look after her guests and her little brother to make sure everyone was having fun. She loved opening all of her presents and even though we did so privately, she still oooohed and aaahed and exclaimed over each one and made sure take time to appreciate it all.  We take a picture of her with each present to include in thank you notes.  It adds a personal touch and we know the kids like to see their friend enjoying the present.

Girlie also loves passing out goodie bags at parties and this year was no exception.  The only change was that I picked up favors at Daiso Japan while I was in San Francisco last week.  I bought this huge stash of bento supplies and put together bento boxes for each kid:

I did not get a picture of the individual favor boxes, but they each had a yellow or pink 2-tier bento box, a cookie cutter, a fork and spoon set, and 2 bento picks.  I tied them with ribbon and attached a paper that explained our love of Pinterest and my profile name if they wanted to follow me or see more bento ideas.  The kids seemed pretty excited.  I hope they like them!  It was not a toy like they probably expected, but hopefully this will get used or at least not be stepped on by a parent at 2am.

And as soon as our guests were out the door and gifts were opened, I got right back to work on making the Madagascar 3 Afro Polka Dot Circus Cupcakes my girlie specifically requested for her school birthday treat!  We usually do rice krispy treats, but this  was what she really wanted.  The look of the kids faces when they saw them was priceless, they were laughing as they remembered Marty’s song and dance from the most recent movie. Thanks again to BentOnBetterLunches for that great idea!  These are easy to make and consistently come out great!

Do you go nuts over parties like I do?  This was a “small and low-key” party for me and it was still a ton of people and a lot of work.  Girlie actually asked me for something for her birthday gift and I said “NO! This party is your gift!”  She accepted it pretty easily, which helped my cause.  I’d love to say that next year’s party will be smaller, but I know me and I can’t help myself.  If you have any advice on managing this issue, please send me your suggestion! I need help!

Back to School: Start Smart – Pack a Rainbow!

Back to School: Start Smart – Pack a Rainbow!

Camp is winding down in the next couple of weeks and back to school is on everyone’s mind.  Every time I log on to facebook or pinterest, I see a slew of articles on how to prepare, how to commemorate the first day, and how to pack a great lunch.

I have already provided some lunch-packing tips on the FAQ section of this site, but today I want to focus on one of my favorite lunch strategies: packing a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for a diverse nutrition profile.  The lunch I have packed today is very simple and clean and took less than 10 minutes to prepare.  I did not use very many special tools or extra touches – everything I used was purchased locally at the grocery store or at Michael’s.  The highlight of this lunch is the colorful and bite-sized pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables.  Check out this beautiful EasyLunchBox:

The small compartments hold the rainbow of fruits and veggies.  I have red tomatoes, orange bell peppers, yellow pineapple, green cucumber, blueberries, and purple grapes!  In one silicon cup, I have some rolled up deli meat skewered with orange bell peppers.  The other silicon cup contains sliced cheese that I cut with a star cookie cutter.  There are some gluten-free crackers included, so my daughter may make her own lunchable-style cracker sandwiches.  This lunch can be totally gluten-free or vegetarian, depending on what type of deli meat you choose.  This bento has my Girlie’s current favorite – Tofurkey Bologna!  This lunch is also peanut free and dye free, making it a safe-bet for classrooms with allergy restrictions.

I pack our EasyLunchboxes in an insulated bag with a reusable water bottle, cloth napkin, silverware, and an ice pack.  This also enables me to model for my kids that we need to create less trash.  Everything I pack for them comes back home to be washed and used again.  I truly believe that the nutritional and environmental habits I enforce through what I pack for them is creating a standard that they will live by as they grow to make their own choices later in life.
Your homework: Pack a Rainbow!  See how many colors you can cram into a lunchbox.  Note if your kids eat more of the good stuff, when presented with variety.  I’d love to hear if this works for you and you find it worth the effort.

My First BOC Revealed!

My First BOC Revealed!

If you have never heard of woot.com, you will not get this at all.  I’m sorry.  I am even more sorry if I somehow cause you to be addicted to woot.com and begin an arduous quest to obtain a Bag of Crap.  Please don’t hate me.  Disclaimers aside, this is the happy story of my very first BOC!

Woot.com is an awesome one-deal-a-day type of site and I frequently snag some excellent finds there.  On a really fun day, they’ll have a woot-off, where they put great deals up and things sell out quickly, but they replace them with another great deal immediately after.  Sometimes, on a woot-off day, they’ll throw in a Bag of Crap to stir a frenzy among their fans.  A Bag of Crap (BOC) contains THREE random items that they probably could not otherwise get rid of.  You can’t complain with what you receive, because it only costs $3 and it has the name ‘crap’ right in the title… you’re not receiving any real gems.  Still, I had high hopes for my future BOC acquisition and have tried for YEARS to secure one for myself.  Yes, you read that right: YEARS.  You see, when the BOC’s go up on woot’s site, servers crash, all hell breaks loose, and the site just can’t take my order.  If you don’t buy a BOC in the first few seconds, you aren’t getting a BOC at all!  Everyone cries and moans about it, but I think for many of us, it just fuels our burning need to get a BOC even more! Sigh.

On July 12, on a day like any other, and not even a woot-off day, I took a facebook break at the exact moment that Woot posted on their facebook page that they were serving up a BOC for us facebook fans.  Since it caught everyone unawares and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, my dream of buying a Bag of Crap was finally realized.  Like I said, if you have never heard of this before, move along… you won’t be impressed by what I am about to reveal.  However, if you’ve been pining for a BOC of your own, behold my wondrous BOC:

I think I got a super-sized BOC because it was Woot’s birthday celebration!  Or maybe because 2 of the items were spectacularly damaged???  Who knows!?!  Crap is crap, right?  The picture shows all of it, but here are the glorious details (clockwise from the top left):

  • The bag that holds the crap: A recycled tote by Gwen’s Nest.  I’ll use this! Score!
  • T-Shirt – A size small woot! shirt that I can force my kids to wear.
  • DVDs – A 36 disc collection of America Stories of War. The tin is badly damaged, which I think makes it a more authentic looking relic of battle.  This baby is just begging for some sucker to re-gift to!
  • Diva Darling – A microfiber headband.  This requires explanation.  Luckily the back had a nice description so I can understand how to use it! It is a “super gentle and absorbent material that swoops up stray water droplets.  Now you can wash your face in luxury without getting any of your gorgeous hair wet!” I am not exactly sure how I have survived my whole life without this!
  • Water Bottle – It is a STANLEY brand steely wide mouth bottle that is horrendously mangled.  I am not sure what exactly I can find to do with this… perhaps ‘coal’ in someone’s stocking? Let me know if you have any suggestions that don’t involve the dump!
  • Kindle Cover – This is a Cyber Acoustics brand Leather Protective Cover.  I don’t have a Kindle or know anyone who is in the market for one, but this looks pretty nice!  It is a table style padfolio case.  It does offer some protection and feels like it is well-padded.  If you’re in the market for a kindle case, leave a comment.  If I get a few comments, I’ll raffle it off to one of my many fans!  ***Update: Since there is some interest here, it is a Kindle 3 Cover, Model KC-3000BK. Add a comment, and I’ll scribble your name on a paper and put it in my hat. That is my fancy and high-tech methodology!

I was extremely pleased with this BOC.  I would have loved woot-off lights, or a screaming monkey, or anything useful, but this is some good crap, or at least very random crap!  One of these days, I need to do a post on my shirt.woot collection. I have bought more shirts than any sane person should admit and I love all of them.  I am a sick person.

Have you shopped on woot.com?  What’s your favorite purchase to date? Have you ever received a BOC? I’d love to hear about it!
