4 CuteZCute Bento Lunches!

4 CuteZCute Bento Lunches!

Have you tried the CuteZCute sandwich cutter yet?  It has been out of stock on Amazon.com, but it is now back!  To help celebrate its triumphant return (they are made by a mom-friend of mine), I have been making CuteZCute lunches all week!  I made one of each animal.  Check them out:

Pirate Frog EasyLunchbox - RachelsRandom.com

This one is an all-time CuteZCute favorite.  I used the frog template and then cut bones out of white cheddar to make a froggy pirate flag.  I added blueberries and cheese for the border. He has strawberries and some leftover cookie from the huge batch I baked over the weekend. I wish I had captured Little Dude’s face when he saw this thing!  His face lit up and he was jumping up and down.  And then, of course, it was some kid’s pizza-lunch birthday at school and he didn’t get to eat it there.  Fortunately, he hated what I made for dinner that night (some quinoa casserole) and he got to eat his lunch then instead!

CuteZCute Pig - RachelsRandom.com

For this CuteZCute pig I packed for Girlie, I dyed some of the cutouts with beet juice that I had left after roasting beets for dinner.  I dipped them in the beety goodness and then left them out to dry overnight. They were probably too dry to eat, but they sure looked cute!  He also had cheddar and jack cheese cubes, sugar snap peas, strawberries skewered with heart picks, blueberries, tomatoes, and cucumber.

Kitty CuteZCute Sandwich - RachelsRandom.com

Little Dude’s new favorite trend is asking for two sandwiches every day.  He wants a peanut butter sandwich and a cheese sandwich.  Today, he has a CuteZCute cat PB&J sandwich and a tiny flower cheese sandwich that was cut out from Girlie’s sandwich (which will be featured in my Lunch Punch winner announcement, coming soon). He has a mini-dipper of trail mix, strawberries, and pineapple.  I added some cute picks just for fun.  Little Dude helped me pick the pineapple at the grocery this weekend.  As we were going through the store, he held it and kept talking about “Spongebob’s home.”  I let him help me chop up the pineapple chunks this morning and I tried to reinforce knife safety: “When is it OK to use a knife, Little Dude?”  And instead of answering something about having a parent to help you to be safe, he answered “when you’re cutting up Spongebob’s home!”  Gotta love preschool logic!

CuteZCute Panda Kotobuki Box - RachelsRandom.com

This last lunch is a CuteZCute panda in a Panda Kotobuki bento box.  He has the Panda, cheese slices, a strawberry and blueberry flower, and a Chobani Champions yogurt tube.  Cute, fun, and easy to make!

Do you have a CuteZCute cutter yet?  They are only $9.99 for the set of all four animals I showed above.  They are very cute and easy to make. They will produce a lot of leftover bread, but you can use that for bento scrap muffins, egg in a hole, breadcrumbs, and endless other recipes that don’t end up wasting too much food.  For more CuteZCute lunch ideas, check out this pinterest board!

Shaking It Up (a little)!

Shaking It Up (a little)!

Like the rest of the world, I am doing my best to start the New Year right.  I have cleared out all the holiday treats and I’m back to trying to eat as cleanly as I can and encouraging the kids to do the same.  I am lucky because I have full control of one of their meals every day.  They are required to sit at their lunch table and eat.  I cannot get the same result at home sometimes!  This week, I am introducing smoked gouda and parsnips!  Girlie also got to try out a new lunchbox set that I received as a gift from my friend Shannon at BentoLunch.net.

Carrot Chip Bento - RachelsRandom.com

Monday’s new foods included carrot chips (which were a huge hit) and a heart sandwich baked on bread from our new bread machine.  Girlie helped with both projects and I think that helped a lot with her wanting to eat the carrots in particular.  She also has sugar snap peas, tangerine, blueberries, and trail mix.

Crescent Roll & Gouda Bento - RachelsRandom.com

Tuesday’s lunch was packed in this adorable new bento set from Paperchase.  I included granola bites, tangerine and blueberries, vegetarian bacon and cheese crescent rollups, yellow bell pepper, carrots, and 2 small wedges of low-fat smoked gouda.   she also got a frozen smoothie, packed in a ball jar.  This was Girlie’s first taste of smoked gouda and she said her first reaction was “yuck,” but then “YUM” and ate the rest of it!  Now I am scared she will turn into an addict like me! She also loved her new boxes with their adorable and girlie design!

IMG_9824IMG_9825

The lids have adorable girls in kimonos and the boxes came with a strap.  We used the smallest three boxes yesterday and here is how it all looked in her lunchbag, with the smoothie, cloth napkin, reusable spoon, and a straw.  I included a note to say “I love you my little cub!”  because this week’s word family is “-ub.”

CuteZCute & Chobani Bento - RachelsRandom.com

Today’s lunch features a CuteZCute pig with two types of cheese on my homemade bread.  I also put some pinto beans that I cooked yesterday with the sandwich.  The other side of this kotobuki panda container has carrots and parsnips that I sauteed with a little bit of butter and cinnamon and then glazed with maple syrup.  Yeah, it was more like candy than vegetable, but it was her first time tasting a parsnip and she loved it!  I am excited to have given her two new foods already this week!  I also packed the largest of the Paperchase containers with strawberries and blueberries  and I included Chobani Champions.  I am a little jealous of her lunch today.

So, I am 3 for 3 on mixing up lunchboxes for the week and I’ve introduced 2 new foods and carrots prepared in two new ways.  I ran to the farm store by our house and picked up even more fruits and veggies for the rest of the week.  I am not sure what new food I will try next, but I know I am going to keep mixing up lunchboxes for the week and make sure she gets a different style each day. Any suggestions on a new food to try?

Halloween Fun & FrankenStorm Update

Halloween Fun & FrankenStorm Update

Today has been an eventful Halloween already!  We have not set an alarm clock since my daughter was born 6 years ago.  We haven’t needed to because both kids are ridiculously early risers and wake well before we’d have an alarm sounding anyway.  In Murphy’s grand tradition, they both slept in this morning (which meant the adults overslept too) and I had 20 minutes to get them fed, dressed, and out the door.  Today was like a Monday for us because school had been closed for the storm earlier in the week, so I had to have all their backpacks, nap mats, and folders ready to go.   Little Dude did not need lunch because his class was having a pizza party.  I was not sure sure if Girlie needed lunch or not, but i decided to pack a snacky bento anyway, in case she did.  I kept it snack-sized because even if lunch was not provided, I knew they’d be having some big party with plenty of food and she would not be hungry anyway.

Somehow, in the scramble of getting everyone out the door, I threw this bento together with a jack-o-lantern tofurky and cheese sandwich, pumpkin seeds, a plum, carrots, and snow peas.  I added a couple of Halloween picks to make it a little special.  This lunch (above) was made in under 5 minutes and is healthy and relatively balanced.   It can be done!

The pumpkin seeds came from the pumpkins we carved last night.  I took photos of all of them, but the winner was clearly Girlie’s!  She drew her face on with marker and then directed me on where to make the cuts.  We had some safety pumpkin saws and she asked to try them.  I decided that she could handle it with close supervision and let her make a few of the easier cuts herself.   She did most of the eyes and all of the eye lashes.  She did a great job and was very cautious and deliberate with her sawing.  I was very impressed.  Here is her final result and also a cute pic of the kids in their costumes at school this morning:

I have not packed a “normal” lunch in almost two weeks because I was traveling all of last week for work and then we were out of school due to FrankenStorm (aka Hurricane Sandy) this week.  It was nice to get the kids back to school in time for Halloween.  We just heard that our township has postponed Trick-or-Treating until next Wednesday! I sure hope my husband will do the dirty job of breaking this news to my kids. I don’t think I can do it without crying, myself!  Halloween is by far my favorite holiday and I was very excited for tonight.

We got through the storm at our house without much trouble.  We moved in shortly after Hurricane Rita last year and knew the house had made it without suffering any damage.  We did some minor preparation (flashlights, bottled water, non-perishables), but didn’t worry about generators and stuff like that.  Girlie and I made a trip to Costco on Saturday afternoon and were surpised to find the store pretty empty.  Since I knew we’d be stuck in the house for a few days, I let her talk me into buying the Madagascar 3 movie, which came with an awesome Afro-Circus wig.   The conversation went something like this:

Me: “I’ll buy you this, but only if you will promise to put it on and let me take a picture for the website.”

Girlie: “I’ll do you one better!  I’ll put it on and then make a famous YouTube video!”

Me: “Sold!”

I love that kid!  I love how we are just peas in a pod with stuff like this.  Anyway, we finished inside the store and then got to work on making this video:

You can see how she was thrilled to stand on a cart and do her funny dance.  We filmed 3 takes, but the first one had the enthusiasm we liked the best, so that’s the version we went with.  We really have too much fun together.   She’s been wearing the wig EVERYWHERE.  It was the best purchase I’ve made in a long time!  That video was watched a few times while we were stuck inside and Little Dude is singing the Afro-Circus song now too.

We made it through the storm pretty easily.  The house lost some siding.  The heater blew up and we still don’t have “normal”  heat.  We lost power for about 12 hours, starting on Monday night.  I am very thankful for our good fortune and keep thinking of the others who still do not have power and the damage inflicted elsewhere.   I hope everyone can recover relatively quickly.

If you have not yet entered my Chobani Champions giveaway, please do so!  The contest ends tonight and you can enter here.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!

Happy Birthday Bento!

Happy Birthday Bento!

My girlie turned 6 today.  What?? How?? Even though it feels like my life revolves around her and I have tried my best to take in every little moment, I still don’t understand how I could possibly have a 6 year-old in my life!  I know that this is a universal experience of time flying with your little ones, but I am just floored by it anyway.

We had a big BBQ party for her yesterday and there was a ton of leftovers.  To save time and ensure the leftovers were consumed, I packed the bento lunches as I put away the rest of the food.  I packed the kids in their Easy LunchBoxes and my husband got his Lock & Lock.

Here’s Girlie’s birthday BBQ bento:

She has this amazing pasta salad that my mom made with some cubes of white cheddar cheese.  I added picks to spell out the word SIX for her. I’ll have to do a proper six bento later this week, but this will have to do for now.  She was so exited to have a lunch made of “party food” as it was!  She has a fruit salad of pineapple, grapes, and strawberries and some veggies with low-fat ranch in a mini-dipper container.  This will be a healthy and filling lunch for her.

Little Dude’s lunch is similar. He has pasta salad, cheese and crackers, fruit salad, and 2 small slices of tomato pie.  I added some animal fork picks to give him a smile.

My husband got one compartment of the leftover burger toppings and a hamburger.  I threw some extra cauliflower in there too.  The other compartment has pasta salad, fruit salad, veggies, and ranch dip in a small heart container marked “XOXO.”

I was traveling the whole week prior to her party and did not have a lot of time to put together a big bash for her.  We decided on a simple BBQ, but it grew and grew until we ended up with around 50 guests!  Our plan was to have a Pinterest party and attempt some of the pins from our Birthday Parties board, but a lot of those got lost in the chaos of 17 kids running around like crazy!  The kids mostly played in the bounce house, beat up on the piñata, and did some arts and crafts I set out for them (painting and decorating building blocks and foam bookmarks).  The crafts were actually a huge hit and the kids were very creative with their projects.  I was impressed!

Some of the pins I had planned on never even got started.  I wanted to make these ice cream hearts and a star walkway to our backyard party.  I also wanted to do this simple trick with the water bottles.  I just did not have time leading up to or during the party.

We did try to explode watermelons, but all the big ones were gone and it didn’t seem like it was going to work on the tiny ones we found, so we abandoned that too.  I think the only pin we successfully re-created was the terra-cotta-pot-s’mores.  Here is a picture of Girlie with the man she has identified has “the love of her life” making s’mores together:

She is absolutely certain that she is going to marry him when they’re older! Here is my Little Dude going wild on the piñata:

All the kids had fun with that and the scramble for candy was intense!  Finally, here is a picture of my beautiful girlie basking in the glow of the Happy Birthday song:

Aaaaaah! I love how much she grows and changes, but I get very sentimental at birthday time.  I just could not keep my cool when I tucked her in last night, knowing she’d never be 5 again.  Of course, she hugged me and told me not to be sad and that she will always be my baby no matter how old she gets.  And she will.  But not like this.  Not like she is right now.  Sigh.  Oh well, I did sign up for this roller coaster!

She was so gracious at her party and tried to look after her guests and her little brother to make sure everyone was having fun. She loved opening all of her presents and even though we did so privately, she still oooohed and aaahed and exclaimed over each one and made sure take time to appreciate it all.  We take a picture of her with each present to include in thank you notes.  It adds a personal touch and we know the kids like to see their friend enjoying the present.

Girlie also loves passing out goodie bags at parties and this year was no exception.  The only change was that I picked up favors at Daiso Japan while I was in San Francisco last week.  I bought this huge stash of bento supplies and put together bento boxes for each kid:

I did not get a picture of the individual favor boxes, but they each had a yellow or pink 2-tier bento box, a cookie cutter, a fork and spoon set, and 2 bento picks.  I tied them with ribbon and attached a paper that explained our love of Pinterest and my profile name if they wanted to follow me or see more bento ideas.  The kids seemed pretty excited.  I hope they like them!  It was not a toy like they probably expected, but hopefully this will get used or at least not be stepped on by a parent at 2am.

And as soon as our guests were out the door and gifts were opened, I got right back to work on making the Madagascar 3 Afro Polka Dot Circus Cupcakes my girlie specifically requested for her school birthday treat!  We usually do rice krispy treats, but this  was what she really wanted.  The look of the kids faces when they saw them was priceless, they were laughing as they remembered Marty’s song and dance from the most recent movie. Thanks again to BentOnBetterLunches for that great idea!  These are easy to make and consistently come out great!

Do you go nuts over parties like I do?  This was a “small and low-key” party for me and it was still a ton of people and a lot of work.  Girlie actually asked me for something for her birthday gift and I said “NO! This party is your gift!”  She accepted it pretty easily, which helped my cause.  I’d love to say that next year’s party will be smaller, but I know me and I can’t help myself.  If you have any advice on managing this issue, please send me your suggestion! I need help!

Camp has gotten off to a fantastic start for my kids.  Girlie loves her camp group and did a great job of picking a club that really suits her – nature!  She’s been able to pet goats and feed worms to a baby alligator!  At least, I think that is what she was telling me via FaceTime tonight. :)   I’m in Connecticut this week working on a Salesforce implementation and am missing all the fun.  Little Dude has a drop-off meltdown every morning due to his separation anxiety issues, but somehow going to camp with a driver and being delivered by this relative stranger to his camp group is a lot more bearable… go figure!

Anyway, I promised some random-genre posts during the summer lunch-lull and I’ll kick that off with a show and tell on a recent pinterest project: DIY Vanilla Extract! I pinned that to my gift ideas board a few months ago and finally got around to using the idea for end-of-year gifts.  The original post goes into more detail, but for me, the project entailed the following steps:

  • I ordered vanilla bean pods from amazon.com.
  • I bought oil and vinegar bottles from the dollar store.
  • I bought a giant bottle of vodka!
  • I took the lids off the bottles and washed them thoroughly.
  • I sliced the vanilla bean pods down the center and placed two sliced beans (4 segments) in each bottle.
  • I filled the bottle with vodka and put the lids back on.
  • I went to Michaels for scrapbook supplies and mod podge to decorate the bottle and make the labels.
  • I made labels with PowerPoint and printed them on my printer. I’ll send you the files if you want them!
  • I enlisted my husband’s help to cut the scrapbook paper and do a nice job with the mod-podging (is that a verb?).
  • I wrote a nice thank you note to each teacher and bought them Williams Sonoma gift cards (for baking supplies) and put that all together to give to them on the last day of school.

Ok, actually that sounds like a lot of work!  It really wasn’t though because it was fun and involved some shopping!  Here is the final product:

What do you think?  I made a bottle for our family to keep too and I can’t wait to try it.  Have you tried this recipe before?  Do you like to make teacher gifts?  I like to go hybrid when I can… something homemade to be thoughtful and a gift card for something practical.
